It's likely that the root problem here is that HDFView is finding the wrong HDF4/HDF5 installations. HDFView is bundled with its own versions of HDF4 and HDF5. If your path points to other versions of either library, then those may be loaded by HDFView instead. Those versions may not have the java libraries built, or may be the wrong version, causing the application to fail to launch. If your PATH contains directories with other HDF4/HDF5 installations, try removing those directories from the PATH (or removing the installations from those directories).
