I think your problem is caused by the server that's responding HTML data but with XML or JSON "Content-type" header. Client, by default, if no "Content-type" header is found about JSON or XML does not parse response data as you can see in the following code snippet:

    "handleResponse":function(res,data,callback){
            var content = res.headers["content-type"];

            // XML data need to be parsed as JS object
            if (this.isXML(content)){
                parseString(data, function (err, result) {
                    callback(result, res);
                });
            }else if (this.isJSON(content)){
                callback(this.isValidData(data)?JSON.parse(data):data, res);
            }else{
                callback(data, res);
            };
        },

As you can see if no XML neither JSON "Content-type" header is found, response data is returned as is without being parsed. So your code should work properly invoking an HTML page.

You can enable debug in node-rest-client by setting DEBUG env variable( export DEBUG=true in linux or set DEBUG=true in windows) and try to see what's the content-type response returned by the server when calling the page.
