that's how it should work. 500 and 502 are HTTP status code not "exceptions". Error handler is there to catch request or response exceptions raised by request or response node objects.
If you want to handle HTTP status code 500 or 502 as exceptions maybe you can try the following:
var req = client.get("http://localhost:4444/json",function(data, response){
// catch 500 status code and emit error event to be handled by
//request error handler
if (response.statusCode === 500) {
req.emit('error',{message:"error 500"});
return;
}
console.log(data);
});
req.on("error",function(err){
// this will handle request exceptions and reponses with statusCode 500
console.log("request error", err);
})
