I've also had some trouble finding examples. This has been working for me (using mixpanel)

let metrics = Ember.get(this, 'metrics');
metrics.trackEvent('Mixpanel', {
 'event': 'NAME_OF_YOUR_EVENT',
 'custom-property1': 'custom-property-value1',
 'custom-property2': 'custom-property-value2',
});

In case of Mixpanel the 'event' property is required, or else it won't work.
