Currently dlm
feeds the URLs from external file via --inputFile
switch , this is a great and useful option because brings us queue downloading. Thanks for it.
But sometimes we have just 1 URL for download and creating a file.txt and pasting URL and then feeding it in dlm
is too much work.
I think lack of feature of direct processing URL is felt.
Proposed feature look likes this :
dlm "URL"
dlm "https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb"
It would be awesome, to have recursive download in dlm.
It's so much better to start multiple threads to download at the same time, for increasing and boosting download speed and bypass firewall speed limitation.
Specifying the number of connections to one server for each download.
Proposed feature look likes this :
dlm -s 16 'URL / --input-file`
As you can see in screenshot , progress-bar doesn't dynamically change and will make a mess in Terminal until end of download or user interrupt (CTRL-C).
It's because of Terminal window's size, because when we increase the dimensions , it stops its growing.
OS : Arch Linux
DE : KDE Plasma 5.25
Terminal Client : Konsole
Also tested with another Terminal client (Sakura) and same bug :
./dlm -i dlm.txt -M 1 -o . --proxy http://127.0.0.1:10809 -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/97.0.4692.99 Safari/537.36'

You kindly proposed an workaround for using the tool behind the proxy , #6 (comment) , It's working , thank you.
But i think, in-app option for supporting proxies like Socks,HTTPS,HTTPS is more stable, most of download managers have this feature natively.
Thank you for developing this useful tool , i hope one day it will be the most used download-manager , as the tools like aria2 are unmaintained and there is active needs for a good alternative.

dlm use the URL as the filename, if the file is from a redirected URL.
as you see in output get_video?id=Jw9Bym8mVafjmoX&expire
is URL not file name.
The range of .is_redirection()
does not fit on .is_success()
, therefore can't download the file
Url: https://zrn.co/17lite64
Error: `Unrecoverable error while processing https://zrn.co/17lite64 : response status not success - "405 Method Not Allowed"
Not using .is_success()
solve this, but might there are a better way
Edit: got confused, said redirection, It's .is_client_error()
.
Even tough the error is returned, the file can be downloaded
If possible please implement this features to make this tool more feature-rich.
1- Direct receiving URL from command-line dlm URL
2- Custom User-agent dlm -U 'USER-AGENT'
3- Retry option when facing error dlm -r 10
4- Multi-Threaded and Multi-Connection downloading dlm -s 16
5- ARM binaries for macOS, Linux, Windows.
Vielen dank.
Please provide native ARM binaries for Linux, macOS, Windows.
ARM is spreading this days : Apple Silicon
, SBCs like Raspberry PI
, Windows on arm SOCs
I've downloaded the latest release of dlm, and was greeted with segfaults regardless of what arguments I pass to it, or what values I specify.
Thanks for making a fast and simple file downloader. For my use case (downloading millions of files) it's the first I found that works, ie the more popular aria2c just runs out of memory when you pass it such a big file list.
In src/client.rs
, I removed the .pool_max_idle_per_host(0);
as I am downloading many files from the same host, so it is a lot faster let reqwest keep it's connection pool, rather than have it close and open a new connection for every download.
Probably the most typical use case is downloading files from many different hosts, in which case you don't gain anything from keeping a connection pool open, but I also doubt it has a measurable cost.
Especially if you download many small files from the same host, it gives a big speedup to reuse the connection, so maybe it makes sense to be the default? or exposed as a cli flag users can use? or maybe ideal but most work, would be reading the input file, and if the hosts are all different then add the .pool_max_idle_per_host(0);
to the builder and otherwise leave it off and sort or otherwise group the input file by host, so it can reuse the connection when requesting multiple files from the same host
Hey, there! I want to use this project in my project, can you please provide it as library?
In some situations without custom user-agent , downloading is not possible, and server doesn't respond to request because only specific or very recent or standard browser's UA are accepted, for example streaming websites.
Please consider implementing this essential feature.
Proposed feature look likes this :
dlm -U 'user agent'
dlm -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/97.0.4692.99 Safari/537.36'
I was going through the source and found something confusing.
Here is the current finish_all method
dlm/src/progress_bar_manager.rs
Lines 63 to 70 in b5d249c
I am confused. Shouldn't it be max_concurrent_downloads
instead of file_pb_count
? Because at most max_concurrent_downloads
progress bars are being created ?

im trying to download the OEIS database which (by https://oeis.org/wiki/JSON_Format,_Compressed_Files) does not have an extension for the urls, is there a way to tell dlm

The tool really needs a feature to automatically retry the failed download based on the specified time.
Proposed feature look likes this :
dlm -R retry time
dlm -R 10 'URL /--inputFile'
