Well.. I find Toolchains extremely useful to (correctly!) switch between Java versions when doing cross-compilation or just checks with different Java versions, e.g. to check for Java library incompatibilities by compiling against Java 8 and 11 to check for potential issues between Alfresco 6.0 (Java 8) and 6.1 (Java 11). Unfortunately, that plugin does not have a skip option, so there is no option to keep it but have it disabled for users without a toolchain config.
And yes, I realise by not copying my default README from other projects I have left out the section on Toolchain, e.g. you can see it here.

Ok - it's fine by me to leave the toolchain plugin. I have not worked with toolchains in Maven before, and the only reason that I raised the question was that I like when a project just can be cloned and build directly with Maven. But no worries from here as long as we just include the toolchain part in the documentation.
I added the toolchain configuration that you provided and the project is building fine now.
