The location must be set at least once in the app via GPS. Afterwards you can disable the location permission. That way the stored location is always used and you can search for users in your home town on travels. Setting the location manually is planned however, I just haven't found the right library just yet.

The distance slider is missing in the app, but it was more of a suggestion and does not affect a user's compabikity with another.

Could you try changing your search preferences and reload the app?
Only thing I can think of is that your preferences are too restrictive and no user matches them.

  1. A helpful screen describing that, similar to how it is done with chats, would be nice
  2. On the desktop website, there is the cog to set your location and distance, which I didn't find it in the mobile app

I am not sure what is supposed to happen when the user doesn't allow access to location. But allowing access to location is not always meaningfull. One example:

I had only mobile internet for a week and tethered it from my mobile phone to my PC, so the automatic location when using the PC browser was way off, because it was the internet entry node of my mobile carrier.

This should not happen on mobile, due to GPS of course. But it still would be nice to set my location manually. Usecases that come to mind:

  • Looking for people in my home city, even though I am traveling
  • Looking for people to hang out with before traveling somewhere

But maybe thats just me, because my work requires me to travel across the country on a weekly basis.

Search is just a blank screen.

  1. Tried allowing location access
  2. Tried forbidding location access

Still just blank screen in any case. (After pink loading circle)

Other screens work fine.

Installed via F-Droid.

Try this. Go to the alovoa site and login. After you login, try and search for people (the swipey screen). I had the same problem and logging into the site and using the site's swipe thing solved it in the app.
