I will support installing from source if you would like to contribute to development.

Otherwise, check the i3ipc-glib releases page for packages or your package manager. If you don't see a package for your distro, I can probably make you one that works.

You are probably missing the gobject-introspection dependency when building.

You were right on debian the libgirrepository1.0-dev package is needed to successfully create the .gir files.

Anyway I don't understand your phrase about the contribution to the development.
I am planning to create a python script to implement http://bugs.i3wm.org/report/ticket/838#comment:10 of course if you want it to be distributed in the example section I will be more than happy to contribute it.

Nevertheless thank you for your help which point me in the right direction.

Add your script to the examples directory when you are done.
