Hmm ... It's hard to diagnose because given the API you're using there's clearly a very old version of Alert going on in your code. I know it's not what you want to hear but I'm really only a day or two away from tagging v0.8.0 of artax which will use the most up-to-date version of alert.
Try doing the same thing with the current dev branch of artax and it should make all of your dreams come true.

Yeah basically. There are wonky/buggy things that have all been solved in the newer dev branch. Working hard to get a v0.8.0-dev
tagged today. The APIs are frozen for v1.0.0
-- I just have to add a lot of tests before tagging a real release and not a dev release. I won't have enough time to add all the tests today -- that's the only reason I'm looking at a pre-release --dev
tag and not a full v0.8.0
.
But I repeat: the API in the dev branch is frozen, will be supported long-term as part of the impending v1.0.0
and cannot possibly change until there is a v2.0.0
tag.
