I forgot to say, if you change the request to $request = "https://www.google.com/?q=".$randomWord;, the output is:

Progress::SENDING_REQUEST
Progress::SENDING_REQUEST
Progress::AWAITING_RESPONSE
Progress::READING_UNKNOWN
Progress::COMPLETE

which is weird.

These issues have been addressed in the following commits:

This commit improves the error message to help indicate the real problem in this case (a failed socket connection) and provides advice to ease debugging.

In the case of the duplicate Progress::SENDING_REQUEST constants the same status was being assigned both when the socket connection was acquired and again when the request was written to the server. This commit adds a new Progress constant, Progress::CONNECTED to differentiate between the two states.
