i made a couple of changes, I think it's starting to look pretty decent now. I think we shouldn't invest more time in website design stuff at this stage.
@ebolyen, the one thing that would be nice to get in place would just be a redirect from appliedbioinformatics.us to this page (and i'd like the url to stay as the caporasolab.us one, so just a redirect if possible).

I'll work on a redirect. Also I would strongly recommend darkening the body text on the page. It is very hard to read.

Ok, thanks - I'm just using one of the built-in themes, so I'm not sure if that's easy to do. Do you know?

Just a heads up: appliedbioinformatics.us
is going to expire next month, but the .org
is good for another 3 years.
Both are now redirecting, and should be active in ~30 minutes.
Re: Themes, I'll check it out, should be a one-liner

Sweet! One comment about the website: the installation commands aren't being rendered in monospace font- can we have them rendered so they look a little more like commands?
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Totally! Going to try and get a hold of the theme directly, so we don't have to update everything manually each time.
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
@ElBrogrammer Actually, that font is monospace: Monaco,Bitstream Vera Sans Mono,Lucida Console,Terminal
Is it possible you don't have any of these? The last font in that chain should really be monospace
as a final fallback, but for 98% of users, they will see monospace
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Hmm... here's what I'm seeing (using Ubuntu 12.10, Google Chrome):
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
And adding monospace
to pre
and code
seems to fix the issue. Guess I'm missing those fonts... can we add this to the theme anyways for those really annoying users like @ElBrogrammer?
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
I am seeing the same thing with chrome. Adding monospace as a final fallback seems to work.
Firefox is really the better browser. You should switch.
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Yup, I'll make sure those get added to the theme. I'm pretty surprised it wasn't in the theme already. It's like web design 101.
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Cool, thanks! And there's almost no chance of getting me to switch to Firefox... already been there and don't want to go back :)
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Well so long as you know that your personal preferences are entirely wrong. It's all good 😃

haha
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
The install steps are monospace for me in Chrome on OS X:
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
Must be an Ubuntu-Chrome issue... guess I should switch back to using a Mac :)

booooo ubuntu, boooo....
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
What is wrong with all of you...
Also @gregcaporaso, can you send me the theme file or a link to it?
from an-introduction-to-applied-bioinformatics.
booooo @ebolyen, boooo....
Oh, and here is the theme. Note that I just built the page through the automated gh-pages setup under settings.

Thanks!
