Looks like we'd nominally shadow an established C# interface, which I suppose is the reason Unity uses a different name:

I don't think we should just directly wrap Unity functions, then give them names we'd prefer to those chosen by Unity Inc, least of all if the new name is itself that of a common C# function/method/whatever. If we have some solid philosophy of duplication that unifies, extends, or complements the Unity API, it makes sense to express that with a new name or names. Otherwise I think we should just let bad enough alone.

With the new API/protocols/components, a clone function distinct from instantiate finally makes sense.
