you need python-dev too. We have a list here from getting Sergio set up. Someone on will have to figure out the same on a mac from a fresh install.

Ubuntu 11.10's multiarch support makes PIL not find the libraries it needs. This should fix it on 64-bit machines:

sudo aptitude build-dep python-imaging
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so /usr/lib
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjpeg.so /usr/lib
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so /usr/lib
pip install -U PIL

For 32-bit installations, replace x86_64 with i386.
