This would be more of a Twitter Bootstrap thing. I haven't changed the CSS on the .modal-backdrop.

Can you give me more details though? Browser, JSFiddle example, version of Bootstrap, etc?

While trying to create a minimal example for a JSFiddle, I noticed that your included example file 1.2 doesn't seem to have this issue. I didn't think it was site specific to my usage, but it may be after all. So I'm just going to close the issue until or unless I can isolate something specific. Sorry for taking your time on it.

I figured out why my modal was flashing visible on page load. When I initially read the docs, I thought that both <a href="myModal" data-toggle="modal" data-dynamic="true">Launch the awesome modal</a>

and

$("#myModal").modal({ dynamic: true });

were required, since it says 'and', figuring maybe the latter was some kind of initialization. But then I realized that the latter is just to launch it via JavaScript.
