The fix should be as easy as adding special cases for these special characters in editor_process_keypress ().

Update
After commit 114e30f , most of the basic special characters are taken care of, these characters include "Enter" key for newline and "Backspace" for deletion.
There are ton of more special characters that can be added, but for now I think these should be enough to provide the most basic functionality to the editor.
