Which version of Atom are you using? Can you try updating to the latest version and see if that helps?

Looks like I was on an old version, but now atom won't update. Beta software. I give up, I'll just use BBEdit.

Sorry for the trouble. Downloading the latest version from the website should always work -- https://atom.io. Atom had an auto-updater issue some versions ago (which was since fixed), so you might be hitting that.

It's not working for me either. I just re-downloaded atom from the website and I still can't update spell check:

Spell checker 1.0 doesn't yet work with the latest Atom release, it is being staged to work against chrome 35 which will hopefully be merged soon via atom/atom#3032

You shouldn't need to explicitly install spell check, it comes bundled with atom so it shouldn't be installed to ~/.atom/packages. If you remove it from there, Atom will then use the bundled version.
