Cannot set property 'buffer' of undefined about home-controller

The reason for the error is your are missing the new statement when you create your gateway from the Insteon class. Also, you only need to call connect once and make sure not to overwrite your var gw. Try the following code:

var Insteon = require('home-controller').Insteon;
var gw = new Insteon();
gw.connect('192.168.10.10', function(){
  console.log('Connected!');
});
