You can use Firebug (for Firefox or a similar tool) to see the AJAX requests sent to the server and the reply from Sharepoint. The 'error' cannot show you all the errors.... but you can find it checking what Sharepoint replied.

Sure. There was no error at all from the add method which surely should have indicated something was not ok, no?

Indeed. If 'error' is not called at all it means something went wrong before that :)

I reckon it was the "UpdateListItems" SOAP call that went wrong
