So this seems to happen with the race detector running or now. But if it is running and I cause an intentional dead lock it definitely, this happens. Any thoughts? Thanks

OSXFUSE has a timeout (something like 30 or 60 seconds) and unmounts filesystems when the userspace implementation no longer responds. You should find a log message from the kernel extension in the kernel log when this happens.
