Here is how it looks when I set vertical-border to base02. The border may be too subtle, but it matches the mode line borders.

I'm currently under a mountain of work.. I'll wait for that to settle and allow for others to comment on this.

Maybe i should try adding a new gray color specifically for the window outlines... this color might need to be somewhere in between base01 and base02, possibly mixing in a little more black than the regular base**s

I've added new gray that is only to be used for thin lines on high color displays and tried to shuffle around boxes, underlines and overlines not make it suck too much.

I had to remove the visible boxing of inactive mode lines which means no lines on the left or right sides of the inactive mode line, but that should not be very important. I wish emacs could support different colors and line widths for each box side but it does not and thats that.
