I get the same error regardless of theme (zenburn or solarized) with Emacs 24.2.91.1, in ansi-term as well. ls is aliased to 'ls --color=auto', and works without error if I specify 'ls --color=none', so it has to do with our terminals trying to use ansi color codes. 24.3 appears to have changed something in regards to the faces used in rendering color on terminals.
I don't have a fix (other than not using color on terminals.)
