GTMETSTA distinguishes between metro areas, non-metro areas, and unidentified areas. Seems like I would need a second variable to tell between suburban and urban parts of metro areas.

GTCBSAST distinguishes between principal city (1) and balance (2). From the CEPR data program files, balance (2) is equivalent to suburb.

I've already added the metro vs non-metro variable and therefore am removing this issue from the v0.2 project.
