because of the wildcard cert that is used for s3's HTTPS trying to call any S3 bucket with a period in the bucket name will cause an error see https://github.com/boto/boto/issues/421 for details the workaroud is to force S3 to use OrdinaryCallingFormat() when making the S3 connnection
