Hi @srbala,

we are reluctant to change the format of "java -version", as a number of hand-crafted parsers which do not follow JEP 223 and JEP 322 depend on the standard output of this command. I can't comment how other distributions ensure it works. Also, we do not have plans to support OpenJ9.

If you are looking for a standardised means to verify the JDK distribution that is used my recommendation is to query for the standard system properties such as java.vendor and java.vm.name. You can write a simple java program that outputs these to command line or grep
java -XshowSettings:properties output.

@voitylov thanks for your input, I was looking to determine java.vendor and java.vm.name thru scripting. I can use system properties to determine.
