strace -e trace=file shows the problem:

[pid 26533] mkdir("/usr/lib/nodejs/blogsiple/extension/blogsiple/static/css", 0777) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)
[pid 26534] mkdir("/usr/lib/nodejs/blogsiple/extension/blogsiple/static/js", 0777) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

So I guess this issue only affects blogsiple when it is installed with -g

Well I couldn't get blogsiple to work when it was installed without -g due to another issue that I'm about to file, but it works with -g if I run it using sudo to get around the permissions problem. Not ideal.
