BTW, there is a simple patch for this, in magic_columns.rb modify to

  module InstanceMethods
    private
      def increase_failed_login_count
        if (errors.on(password_field) || errors.on('base'))&& attempted_record.respond_to?(:failed_login_count)
          attempted_record.failed_login_count ||= 0
          attempted_record.failed_login_count += 1
        end
      end

I added the || errors.on('base').

Not sure if 'base' should be something else, but his does work.
