Okay, I solved it. dotenv gem is required to make it work. Please add it to your gemspec, or readme.

Nevermind, I spoke too soon. I have included dotenv-rails on the top of my gemfile and am still having issues.

The error occurs on rake assets:precompile

I have the same problem; rails 3.2.17, ruby 2.1.2.

I ended up not using dotenv-rails, but doing:

require 'dotenv'
Dotenv.load '.env'

In application.rb

and

gem 'dotenv'
gem 'dotenv-deployment'

In my Gemfile

I had the same problem with rails: 4.1.1, ruby 2.1.1. But more importantly, I had dotenv version 0.9, which is too old to support dotenv-deployment. bundle update dotenv dotenv-deployment dotenv-rails fixed it.

The gemspec for dotenv-deployment should require dotenv 0.10 so this doesn't happen to people.

I just pushed out dotenv 1.0 and dotenv-deployment 0.2.0 which removes the deprecation warnings and updates the gem dependencies.
