Here's a CodePen. Did it illustrate what you intend?

You should know that if the parent is not a direct ascendant of your element you will probably have a problem. In other words, cousins and distant relatives in the Dom won't work. If that's what you need then there's other means to get the behaviour you want. Check #57 for an example.

Assuming the following HTML:

<div id="myOtherDiv" class="is-selected" >
    <div id="myDiv">
        <img id="myImg" data-adaptive-background="1" src="someimage.jpg">
    </div>
</div>

And the following JS code:
$.adaptiveBackground.run({ parent: '#myOtherDiv' });

The outermost div will change color based on the results of AdaptiveBackground.
