It is generating before/after because you are passing in a compare to date, ie. Carbon::now(). But it doesn't know that the value is actually "now".

Just do Carbon::parse($date)->diffForHumans(); to get ago being generated.

Thank you good sir @briannesbitt that worked for me. I had the same issue. Your solution is way simpler and cleaner than what I thought I had to do.
