I like the idea of mapping the colors to 'types' of highlights.

We might also want to use an icon and a tooltip to signify each annotation type.

If I can contribute to this discussion, I would recommend the feature suggestion listed above, and the possibility of adding underscore and squiggly underscores of colors of choice (ie defined by user). It helps then the categorisation of multiple statements in articles, etc.

One good implementation of this method is introduced by the app Xodo, especially in their Android/iOS apps (the Desktop and Web Browser solution is not that good). See attached screenshot, what it can do. Again, all the colors can be chosen and the use is super-intuitive.
