it should be working out of the box, I'm using it on a regular basis.
candump should show you the extended frame ids, and you should be able to send them with cansend.

Ah, ok thanks, that is good.
The type of CAN bus is actually a little bit rare, it's the NMEA 2000 bus on boats, compatible with the CAN 2.0b in cars. The messages are exactly the same, except off course the ID codes have different meaning on boats than in cars.
I doubt this could be causing my issues, perhaps more likely that my CANtact board is a dud, linux driver problem or wrong jumper setup.

I have verified with another CAN reader, this one here:

that the can message are being transmitted and can be received.
