Not sure. The width/height setting is wrong - but that can be fixed. However, the brightness I feel does not work as well across dark/light and different covers.

What about simply increasing the blur of now-playing to 25px?

I know, you calculate it differently (w/h), I just did a quickie.
It makes things worse, the more you increase it the more of edge garbage you get. And it looks really bad with some covers where there is dark element peeking at the edge, it gets overblown.

Brightness is beside the point, you can decrease it (I think, unless I'm misunderstanding things)
I've brightened it slightly but it can be the same as yours by decreasing filter by 4-5%.
Plus, it's largely subjective, depending on the screen type, I'm using only OLED ones.

Just to make sure that I'm clear. I'm talking about this:

That's not a shadow but actually background from behind the cover showing through, blur distortion at the edge made the cover transparent.
