I thoght about this too. Especially because the sorting is done with the ID value I think an optional behavior whold be more straightforward and logical.
Maby I will fork and and try to implement this feature if I have some time left if Clemens Niederberger says he will merge it back if it is well coded.

Commit 5387a15 implements it this way: if the first key given in \DeclareAcronym
is not the short
property then the short
property is set automatically to be equal to the ID:
