You seem to be using Ruby 1.8. That is the new hash syntax for Ruby 1.9. They are both correct, but the top version only works in Ruby 1.9. I'm fairly certain that the most recent version of Chef requires 1.9 to run.

It's quite possible that the error was seen on 1.8.7 - the problem surfaced when someone was trying to upload a cookbook with specs in the former syntax, and it was not passing syntax validation.

Both are "correct". I just chose to use the new hash syntax in my examples. The old hash syntax is still valid in Ruby 1.9
