Could you be more specific on what's the view hierarchy like? Is the animated view a descendant view of the table view?

I thought this fixed it, but it didn't:

Replacing:
[self.superview insertSubview:containerView belowSubview:self];

With:
[self.superview insertSubview:containerView aboveSubview:self.superview];

The view I want to dismiss with the genie effect is pushed onto screen with a modal segue. Unless I misundestand the term "descendant", the (modal) view controller is not a descendant of the table view.

Does that explain the view hierarchy and answer your question?
