Hi,

actually I am using 23.3.1 and completion-at-point-functions is available here. Just three days ago however, I came across an Emacs 23.1.(3?) and it was not available there. We had to jump back to a commit before the changes from Tassilo here.

Maybe just using minibuffer.el from a newer version of Emacs is sufficient as a workaround here? I didn't try that myself, I just see that minibuffer.el introduces that variable.

Personally I'd consider versions like 23.1.x to be in wide enough use today to like to see them supported.

Kind regards,
Stefan

It seems to have been added in 23.2.

AFAICT this commit added the variable:

http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/lh/emacs/emacs-23/revision/99026

And according to the ChangeLog http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/lh/emacs/emacs-23/annotate/head:/lisp/ChangeLog the next release was 23.2.

While the 23.x are still widely used, few people cling to 23.1 in particular. Instead of spending time working on backward compatibility it might be best to just update the README with info that 23.2+ is required.
