I'll second this issue - it still exists, and is quite frustrating. My servers are in the us-west-2 region, and the script refuses to run despite having the proper environment variable set.

This led to some confusion for me as well. At the bare minimum the documentation should state that the region specifier is required in order to run the script. Of course, it would be much nicer if the value is read from the aws client configuration.
