“Could we get other map overlays? Los Angeles would be so much better with freeways visible! Like the thumbnails on the main page. Even if freeway labels weren't visible, just having the shape of the roads would be more useful than the satellite view.”

“This game is awesome, but I find it nearly impossible using satellite views. Is there a way to play it overlaid on street map views instead?”

“Just found Click That Hood, ever consider using a more google maps type look? Satellite image gives few reference points.”

Since you're now using MapBox, you could use TileMill to build a set of map
tiles that have roads and geographical features without text labels.

Yep, that’s the plan precisely. :·)

Yeah, we should figure out what we would want to include on a custom tile set. Roads, city boundaries, what else?

Also, exporting a tile set for the whole world at different zoom levels will create a pretty heavy dataset. Are there specific zoom levels that we can use so we can slim this down a bit?

What are the consequences of a “heavy dataset”? We are usually operating at 12+, but then again I just added http://click-that-hood.com/?city=united-states (but that’s probably okay with satellite).

It might be worth considering one extra set for retina/hi-dpi, too.

andyhull avatar andyhull commented on June 12, 2024

I think the only real consequences are the time it will take to export the dataset and the size of the dataset hosted on MapBox. Once it is in place the user shouldn't see any performance problems. I'll try to export some roads tomorrow and see how long it takes.

Thanks – excited to see how it goes!

I did a test and I think we can get this work. I'm going to work on some styles tomorrow.

Probably 12-7 would be sufficient for the game

We might need more. Retina adds one; big screens add one too. One one hand
we have small locations like http://click-that-hood.com/?city=gisborne, on
the other hand: http://click-that-hood.com/?city=united-states. Shouldn’t
be very hard to come up with a range once we need it.
