I'm running out of time to look at this just now, but get_term_capabilities is perhaps worth looking at. It sets @_rl_term_cr using infocmp. Setting it to false on line 1821 "fixes" the problem but I'm not sure of the implications yet or if that is really the true source of the problem.

I've still only seen this problem on Arch machines so far, so perhaps infocmp (or something) is to blame.

I've narrowed this down (after breaking pacman far too many times...) to something that has changed in a recent ncurses.

  • ncurses-6.0+20170429-1 triggers this problem
  • ncurses-6.0+20170128-1 does not
