Basic outline

Idea is to start a terminal with the 'server'. This listens and has an ncurses/some environment/some GUI to show all the progress bars.

From the client, provide a function similar to clint.textui.progress.bar. First call inits connection to the local server, or if it doesn't exist, ignores it for rest of program, or maybe falls back to clint.textui.

Key point is that nested progress bars show nested, nicely, on the UI, and client output doesn't mess with the progress bar.

UI can switch between programs, show total estimated time remaining based on some heuristics, etc.

progress bar naming, pick something which makes sense based on filename/function/line number, etc, or allow explicit naming.
