It seems that Apache doesn't has DOCUMENT_URI (as NGINX does), it that's really the case I might need to parse REQUEST_URI instead.

Now that I know what is missing, I can use a rewrite rule to set the DOCUMENT_URI environment variable:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.+) - [E=DOCUMENT_URI:$1]

That works. But DOCUMENT_URI seems only to be exported by NGINX and is not part of RFC 3875. So we should either use the standard environment variables or place a hint somewhere in the docs. :)

Alternative approach using mod_setenvif instead of mod_rewrite:

SetEnvIf Request_URI "^(.+)" DOCUMENT_URI=$1
