This is the expected (and documented) behavior because in v4, the value accessor passed to node.sum is evaluated for all nodes, not just leaf nodes; v4 allows internal nodes to have value in addition to their children.

If you only want the leaf nodes to have value then you must implement your value accessor accordingly, such as function(d) { return d.children ? 0 : 1; }.
