Hi there. Failure modes a bit tricky, because there is something like a 2 phase commit (updating git history, pushing that, plus whatever was deployed remotely), but there are no transactions. So the model I took was that the first thing that happens is that the repo is tagged. If it fails, the tag remains, even though that wasn't a successful release.

When the next release happens, it sees a previous tag, so bumps the version number. This means you shouldn't need to worry about failed releases, and there shouldn't be anything to roll back. So I'm not too sure what the issue was here. Could you explain a bit more?

If you work with Maven 3.3 / Java 8 you can try this fork: https://github.com/SourcePond/multi-module-release-maven-plugin. It deletes produced tags from local/remote repository if the release fails (for instance because a connection could not established, an artifact could not be found etc.)
