Hi there. It does sound very odd, but it's hard to determine what the specifics of the issue are from your description without a bit more context. Is it that the Values data role is no longer displayed in the Visualizations pane when the issue occurs?

Visuals are not permitted to know anything about the data model, and just receive the dataset that Power BI pushes into it from the query that the main window runs on its behalf. As long as these fields have the same display name when the data source is swapped out, then this is all a visual really cares about. It won't know about underlying changes, or what the source is.

If the Values data role is missing when you view the visual, then this is something that the main Power BI window does upon reading a visual's metadata. Desktop has been known to corrupt custom visuals as they are written to the .pbix, which can usually be remedied by re-installing from AppSource, but if behaviour is normal on other pages, it doesn't sound like this is the issue.

Given that it sounds like this is happening outside the visual, my gut feeling is that there is possibly something specific to Desktop causing this issue, or custom visuals in-general. If this is the case, I'll need to provide MS with very specific detail as to how this is happening, and how it can be reproduced. Whether the issue lies here or with Deneb, I'll need as much detail from yourself as possible to try and reproduce and isolate, if you're looking for some assistance with this from my end.

Can you reproduce this if you repeat the steps? If so, does it happen with other custom visuals or core visuals on the same page? Are you using DirectQuery or import? If it's specific to Deneb, can you please provide detailed reproduction steps (ideally a video or screenshots will help me to clarify what the nature of the issue is)? Is it possible to provide the .pbix? This will be particularly helpful if the issue is not reproducible, as there may be something in the report metadata that can provide further insight.

Good questions. I added another chart using a built-in visual and the issue happened to it as well. I should probably follow up with Microsoft based on that experiment. I've reproduced the issue several times so my guess is something changed in the October PBI update since the report has been working fine for several months. Maybe the .pbix is corrupt. When I get some time I'll re-create the report from scratch.

Since you asked for details, I'm using data import. After changing the data source (all I change is the server name), the visual goes blank. The values data role is still there but when I edit the visual, the dataset is empty. If I try to edit the field mappings, the "Assigned Column/Measure" dropdowns are non-functional and after some further editing attempts the whole mapping form is blank. I was able to create the visual on another page but when I moved that page to be the first page, the visual went blank.

I'm happy to send a .pbix but I will have to edit the data to use dummy values when I can get some time, and then make sure the issue is still reproduceable. Meantime, I'll pursue this with Microsoft and come back with any insights. Thanks for the quick reply!
