Hm not sure if this is a good idea, depends on your usecase, but i think it should be only implemented for network mounts like sshfs, nfs, ...

I'm not totally sure how it'll shake out but I can see a decent heuristic being to manage anything listed in /etc/mtab that's not also in /etc/fstab.

I read the twitter conversation and it seems that the idea comes from
ec2. So maybe implement it environment dependent? On a normal server
including local /etc/fstab entries makes not so much sense as on ec2.

I am not sure whats best though. Including it on every system or just
include it on specific environments like ec2. OTOH it should maybe also
be possible to filter it on the output...
