I wanted to check play with ragel, which is why I chose it for this project. Nex and https://github.com/cznic/golex are two other options for lexer generators I looked at. Nex is the simpler of the two. I would look also at performance benchmarks. I have the feeling ragel is fastest, then golex, then Nex. (But this is all conjecture.)

if speed performance matters, writing the lexer per hand is the way to go...
