The error you have reported is a PostgreSQL error, not due to the lack of the gem in the environment, but the lack of the hstore extension in the database. The schema carries the hstore columns, but the gem does not enable PostgreSQL extensions in schema.rb. Take a look at Test Database section in the README file.

The problem exists if you use custom schema (e.g. myschema) and schema path without public. "CREATE EXTENSION hstore" is created in public schema of your database by default. Then to use hstore instead of:

  schema_search_path: myschema

your database.yml should contain following line in every environment:

  schema_search_path: myschema, public

Eventually you can add extension exclusively to your schema this way:

 CREATE EXTENSION hstore SCHEMA myschema
