You can emulate the STATUS call with XIO 13:

OPEN #1,13,0,"R:"
DO
  XIO 13,#1,0,0,""
  IF PEEK(749)>0
    ?"Buffer still has data..."
  ELSE
    ? "Buffer Empty!"
  ENDIF
LOOP

This should be equivalent to your code above.
