Recognized the same issue when running tmux using fig run.

The $COLUMNS and $LINES bash variables stay on 80 and 23 when starting tmux using fig. However if I start tmux using docker in the container that gets generated by fig the variables are updated and tmux can resize itself to the correct windowsize.

Is there anything you can do about this?

+1 for this - it causes problems while running in non-standard terminal sizes and dealing with lines > 80 chars, the wraparound is messy.
