My 2cents:
Why not keep it next to the word? Maybe we can adjust the pause? Slightly longer for a , and then again slightly longer for a .
I'm not sure if you would pick it up if it's combined with a " in the wrapper.

If you place it next to the word it implies it's inside the quotes. That's what I did on my version but I guess it doesn't make sense. You could just kill the periods all together and rather have a visual cue for the start of a new sentence, perhaps the left hand panel glows green. Not sure about that though :>
